Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the Shira Route unique?
The Shira Route begins at a higher altitude on the Shira Plateau, offering a scenic and less crowded path. It’s one of the oldest routes and features stunning volcanic landscapes and panoramic views.
The route starts at a high elevation (3,600m), making it better suited for experienced trekkers or those already acclimatized. Beginners can attempt this route but should prepare adequately for altitude challenges.
The success rate is approximately 60–70% due to the rapid altitude gain. Adding an extra day for acclimatization can improve the success rate significantly.
Both routes traverse the Shira Plateau, but the Shira Route starts higher, making it less physically demanding initially but more challenging for acclimatization. The Lemosho Route has a lower starting point, offering more gradual acclimatization.

Trekkers sleep in high-quality mountain tents provided by the tour operator. Campsites are equipped with dining tents and basic toilet facilities.

Guides monitor for symptoms, and acclimatization is built into the itinerary. Emergency oxygen and first aid kits are available, and climbers are encouraged to stay hydrated and ascend slowly.
The trail features diverse terrain, including:
  • Volcanic rock formations on the Shira Plateau.
  • Steep ascents, such as the Barranco Wall.
  • Rocky alpine desert leading to Barafu Camp.
  • Snowy and icy paths near the summit.
